A preposition is a word that is placed before a noun or a pronoun to show its relationship to other words in a sentence. Preposition is a word or phrase that connects a noun or pronoun to a verb or adjective in a sentence.
Common Prepositions:in, on, at, to, with, during, before, after
Sometimes, a sentence can end with a preposition. Read the sentences given below.
◆ This seat is not very comfortable to sit _________.
◆ My father gave me some pictures to look _________.
◆ Was it worth waiting _________?
The preposition ‘in’, ‘at’, and ‘for’ occur at the end of the sentence. This is acceptable in usage.
Prepositions can be classified into three groups as Time, Position and Place.
Prepositions of time
These prepositions are used to indicate when a particular event happened. These include: in, on, at, since, for, during, before, after, etc.
Examples in the following sentences are in bold for easy identification.
I was born on July 4, 1982.
I was born in 1982.
I was born at exactly 2 a.m.
I was born two minutes before my twin brother.
I was born after the Great War ended.
I first met John in 1987.
It’s always cold in January.
Easter falls in spring each year.
We eat breakfast in the morning.
Prepositions of Place
These prepositions are used to indicate the location and come before a noun or a pronoun These include: in, on, between, behind, under, over, near etc.
1. The cat is on the wall.
2. Jenny lives near her workplace.
3. Raj is in his room.
Prepositions of Movement
These prepositions are used to describe movement. These include: to, into, towards, through etc.
1. I went to the book store.
2. The swimmer jumped into the pool.
3. The dog was coming towards him.
Here are a few prepositions which cause confusion. The examples illustrate the correct usage.
Since
For
‘Since’ refers to a particular point of time.
‘For’ refers to the duration of the time.
1. I have been studying since 5 a.m., and I am at it even now.
2. The construction of this building has been going on since January.
1. Maya has worked in this institution as an accountant for 23 years.
2. Many ideas were discussed for three weeks before the annual day theme was finalised.
Above
Over
‘Above’ – when one thing is not directly over the other
‘Over’ – for horizontal movement at a higher level
My brother lived in the mountains above the lake.
I saw a helicopter fly over a lake.
Below
Under
‘Below’ is the opposite of ‘above’
‘under’ is the opposite of ‘over’; for horizontal movement at a lower level
Her head was below the level of the table. So, nobody noticed her.
A child places his toys under a blanket.
A boy ran under the bridge when the river was dry.
Along
Through
‘Along’ – for following a line of specific movement
‘through’ – for movement in a three dimensional space from one side to the other
A man walked along the side of the river.
Hunters walked through the forest.
Between
Among
‘Between’ is used for two nouns/adverbials, when there is ‘and’ in the sentence
‘Among’ is used when we see the people or thinks as part of a group or mass.
1. The discussion on a sports meet between our school and other schools are going on for two days.
2. The final match will be held between India and Australia.
1. The sailors divided the money among themselves; and the ship sailed on.
2. We’d discussed this point among ourselves many times over the past months.
Before
After
‘Before’ – used for the second action in a phrase when we mention two actions
‘After’ – used for the first action in a phrase when we mention two actions
Before eating food, we clean our hands.
After eating food, children love playing.
During
In
Both ‘during’ and ‘in’ are used to describe actions that happen in a particular period of time.
1. We will be visiting my grandparents during the summer vacation.
(or)
2. We will be visiting my grandparents in the summer vacation.
Prepositional verbs
Some verbs are usually followed by prepositions before the object of the verb.
Examples
i. The kids laughed at the hilarious antics of the clown.
ii. Fathima planned to stay at a hotel, when she visited Mumbai.
iii. I have pressing matters to attend to in Kolkata.
iv. I believe in the healing power of a mother’s touch.
v. She was so happy in life that she could not ask for more.
vi. The elderly couple care for their pets as they do for their children.
vii. I agree with everything you’ve said.

Prepositional Phrases
A prepositional phrase is made up of a preposition and a noun phrase. These prepositions are formed by two-word or a three-word combination such as according to, along with, at the time of, because of, owing to, instead of etc. These kinds of prepositions are used frequently in our day to day life.
