TNPSC – DATA INTERPRETATION
Data Interpretation:
Data interpretation is interpreting the available information on the basis of requirement. The available data is presented either in the form of a table or a bar chart or a pie chart or a line graph or as a combination of one of these formats from which you will have to interpret and analyse the data.
These types of questions test your speed, decision making capability and capability of analysing data and extracting required information there from.
Type 1: Data interpretation based on Data Table
Example 1: (TNPSC 2015)
In which year the production of scooters of all types taken together exceeds the average annual production, from the table given below?
Production of scooters by a company?
Soln. A) 2010
In the given chart of production of scooters, of all the years, 80 only is greater than the other. Hence in year 2010, the production of scooters of all types exceeds the other.
Type 2: Data interpretation based on Bar Graph
Example 2: (Health officer – 2015)
The ratio of number of students taking cricket to the number of students taking tennis in class C from the following diagram is
Soln. A) 9 : 11
In class ‘C’ No. of students taking cricket is = 45
In class ‘C’ No. of students taking tennis is = 55
Their ratio = 45 : 55 = 9 : 11
Type 3: Data interpretation based on Line Graph
Example 3: (Group IV (JESEO) – 2013)
SALES BY TWO CATEGORY FOR ABC PRESS, 2000 – 2010.
Soln. C) 6 years
Sales of science book exceeds sales of arts books in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008.
Therefore, No. of years in which the sales of science books exceed the sales of arts books from 2000 to 2009 is 6 years.
Type 4: Data interpretation based on Pie Chart
It should be remembered that the central angle is of 360o, but if the information is given in terms of percentage then the total should be considered as 100.
Example 4: (Statistical Inspector Tamil Nadu Animal Husbandry Sub-ordinate -2014)
From the Pie Diagram given below find the central angle Eo.
Soln. B) 45o
For 100% the central angle (total) at the pie diagram = 360o
For 12.5% the central angle (total) at the pie diagram = (12.5 / 100) * 360 = 45%
Type 5: Data interpretation based on Statistical Data
Example 5:
These statistical data were collected in the year 2005.
Hamirpur in Gujarat is a small township with a population of 75000. 40% of the population belongs to the above 35 age category. The ratio of males to females is 1:15. Past records indicate that the population in Hamirpur grows is 2 lakh acres. Paddy is the major crop of Hamirpur and has shown average productivity levels of 2.5 tonnes per acre. Hamirpur receives about 10 inches of rainfall in a normal monsoon year.
The number of people in Hamirpur below the age of 35 is
Soln. C) 45000
Population of Hamirpur = 75000
Population below the age of 35 = (60/100)*75000 = 45000
